Some artists paint beauty. María Esther Panesso Mercado paints resilience.
Before her work appeared in international galleries and on the iconic screens of Times Square, she spent years inside Colombian courtrooms defending women in vulnerable situations. That rare duality—attorney and internationally exhibited artist—is not a contradiction, but the very foundation of her artistic vision.
Mercado signs every painting with her maternal surname as a tribute to the woman who raised her and her family after the death of her father when she was still a child. That act transforms her signature into something more than a name—it becomes a declaration.
Every canvas bearing the name MERCADO carries the story of resilience, strength, andfeminine dignity that defines her work.
Today, her paintings have appeared on the Nasdaq screen in Times Square (2023) and on the Broadway digital screens in Times Square (2026), projecting her work at the visual epicenter of global culture and commerce. Her international trajectory includes exhibitions in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Mexico, Rome, and Peru, including participation in the historic Salon d’Automne in Paris, the legendary exhibition where masters such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso first presented their revolutionary work.
Recognized by Forbes Colombia as one of the 50 most creative Colombians in the world, Mercado is emerging as one of the rising voices of contemporary Latin American figurative art—an artist whose work combines emotional depth, cultural identity, and growing international visibility.
For collectors, Mercado’s work represents more than aesthetic beauty. It represents a powerful narrative, a distinctive visual language, and an expanding international presence that positions her work within the growing global interest in contemporary Latin American art.
